Networking & Training Events

The A&SL committee organise professional networking and training events throughout the year. Our training and workshops aim to provide training or professional development opportunities for our members. Regular informal networking evenings, talks and tours offer an opportunity for information professionals to meet and socialise. Networking events usually take place on weekday evenings, feature an invited guest speaker and include drinks and refreshments. We look forward to meeting you are our next event.

A&SL are delighted to welcome Alison Macrina (@flexlibris) director of the Library

 

Freedom Project to Dublin.    

The Library Freedom Project is a US partnership of Librarians, Technologists , legal

professionals and online privacy advocates. They provide training and resources to raise

awareness of online privacy and security.

The talk wil also feature input on Irish and EU online privacy law from Eoin O' Dell TCD law lecturer.       

We would encourage anyone interested in the role of librarians raising awareness of

 

 

staying secure, protecting privacy and data online to join us for this talk.

A & SL AGM & talk by Aoife Lawton author of 'The invisible Librarian'

The Annual General Meeting of the Academic and Special Libraries Section will take place on 

Thursday June 16th.

Our guest speaker is the the evening Aoife Lawton, author of 'The Invisible Librarian; a Librarians

guide to increasing visibility and impact'. Aoife will talk about the book and its development.

Copies of the book wil also be available to buy at the event at a cost of €40

Cryptoparty - online privacy and digital security training
When: Saturday August 6th & Sunday August 7th   

Where: Dublin Business School, Castle House, Georges St, Dublin 2 

A&SL will host two consecutive workshops with the aim of introducing the basics of practical online security and data protection. This will be an informal but practical session 

Topics covered: Saturday Aug 6th  - concepts in encryption, the role of librarians in online privacy, browser plugins, password best practices.

Sunday, August 7 - Hands-on session exploring tools and practices, threat modelling, TOR Browser, data and communication encryption.

Attendees should bring theor own device

The Safe House: A Decline of Ideas - Irish Premiere Screening
When: Saturday December 3rd   

Where: UCD Cinema 

The Academic & Special Libraries Section of the Library Association of Ireland proudly presents the Irish premiere of The Safe House: A Decline of Ideas, written and directed by Greta Bellamacina & Davina Catt. This documentary explores the heritage and significance of the British Public Library, and documents its dramatic decline in recent years. 
The film features intimate and personal stories from celebrated figures, including names such as Stephen Fry, Irvine Welsh, Bonnie Wright, Amma Asante, Johnathan Cooper Clarke, and Daisy Goodwin. Entitled The Safe House: A Decline of Ideas, the project will also discuss possibilities of how public libraries could be salvaged for future generations.
There will be a Q&A session after the screening with the filmmakers themselves, so come prepared with questions and hopefully we'll get a good discussion going!

Library Leadership Workshop with Andy Priestner

The Career Development Group  with the Academic & Special Libraries Section present a Library Leadership Workshop with Andy Priestner 

Aim and Focus : This is a one day course for emerging or new leaders in librarianship. It is designed to explore what effective leadership involves and explore different leadership approaches. The course focuses specifically on what is required of leaders in libraries based on the current state of the industry and the opinions of library directors from all over the world.

Our guest speaker is Kalpana Shankar, Professor of Information and Communication Studies & Head of School, School of Information and Communication Studies, UCD, with a talk entitled: Why the World Needs Information Professionals More than Ever.

There will also be a drinks and canapés reception.
